As a business, we’re enormously proud of our heritage, of which one of the most important elements is our association to the New Forest, the place we’re delighted to call home. So with this week (24th – 29th July 2017) being dedicated ‘National Parks Week’ we wanted to take a closer look at our unique region of this great country.

Located on the South Coast of England, within the county of Hampshire, the New Forest National Park covers an area of approximately 150 square miles. Given the prestigious ‘National Park’ status in March 2005, the region features a rare combination of open heathlands and ancient woodlands, renowned for its ponies, cows, pigs and donkeys that roam freely, and of course, the distinctive coastline made up of shingle beaches, diverse saltmarsh lagoons and incredible mudflats teeming with wildlife.

Less than an hour from Southampton, Bournemouth and Salisbury, the New Forest National Park is one of the most accessible National Parks in the country, and as such welcomes a staggering 13.5 million visitors a year. So whether you’re looking for a family day out, an action packed vacation, or are visiting the area to simply enjoy one of the many luxury hotels, we truly believe the New Forest National Park has something to suit. Don’t just take our word for it, come and see for yourself, and make the most of the dedicated events and activities for National Parks Week in the process!

To celebrate the occasion, we’ve picked our top five things to do in the New Forest, so prepare yourself a picnic, lace up those walking boots (and pack the raincoat looking at this week’s forecast!) and experience the true wonder of the place we call home:

THE NEW FOREST ICE CREAM TOP 5:

1)   The beaches – With a largely unspoilt coastline, a trip to one of the New Forest’s miles of beaches is great fun for all the family. Whether you’re looking to top up your tan, construct spectacular sandcastles or satisfy your inner palaeontologist by hunting fossils along this Jurassic coast, the New Forest has it all. Our particular favourites are:

·    Barton on Sea – soft clay cliffs make this one of the best fossil finding spots in the country

·    Calshot – the true water sports enthusiasts dream

·    Mudeford Sandbank – A wonderful family friendly spot complete with the little land train to keep the tots entertained.

2)   The Forest – Whether on two feet or two wheels, getting out to explore the park is one of the best ways to see the area and get up close to some of the iconic free-roaming animals. With bike hire shops in almost every town and village, over 140 miles of clearly defined paths criss-crossing the park and endless country pubs offering light refreshment along the way, visitors can make a morning, a day or even a whole weekend out of exploring the wonders of the New Forest. Check out the following website for tips on some of the best routes: www.thenewforest.co.uk/walking

3)   Ashurst (Longdown Dairy Farm & New Forest Wildlife Park) – A truly great experience for the entire family. Why not take a trip to Longdown Dairy Farm where visitors can bottle-feed the new born goats and calves, feed the ducks, and meet the pigs, donkeys and even alpacas. Lots of great indoor and outdoor activities also makes this a great day out in any weather.  Alternatively, go wild at the New Forest Wildlife Park. Follow woodland trails to see the beautiful animals in their natural surroundings. Set in 25 acres of pristine woodland, the park allows visitors to get up close to native deer, otters and wolves or witness the majestic bison, lynx and wild cats roam their enclosures.

4)   Exbury Gardens & Steam Railway – For something a little more serene, why not take the family to Exbury Gardens. The inspiration of the Rothschild family, the 200 acre site offers one of the finest woodland gardens in the country. Including rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and rare trees and shrubs, the summer months offer guests an oasis o f tranquillity. For the younger members of the family, a 20 minute trip aboard the 12 ¼ inch gauge steam railway is sure to delight while the adventure play area is a highlight for many visiting little ones!

5)   The New Forest Ice Cream Parlour – Well we couldn’t have a list of our top things to do in the New Forest without mentioning ice cream, could we? After a day exploring the wonderful New Forest National Park and the South Coast, there is nothing more satisfying that a delicious scoop of your favourite New Forest Ice Cream flavour. Located just at the bottom of Lymington High Street, the parlour stocks many of our most popular varieties as well as a range of wonderful hot beverages making a great stop, no matter what the British weather may throw at you.

Wishing you a very happy National Ice Cream Month from all of the team here at New Forest Ice Cream! It probably isn’t a surprise that this is our favourite time of year and of course our favourite month. The summer is the perfect opportunity to indulge in the delicious frozen delight even more than usual. It makes us very happy that there is an entire month dedicated to doing just that.

In 1984 President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. This means that National Ice Cream Day will be celebrated on 16th July this year, not long to wait!  What better way to celebrate than to treat yourself to a scoop or two of your favourite New Forest Ice Cream?

As its National Ice Cream month, we thought we would share some interesting facts about New Forest Ice Cream. After 37 years in the industry we certainly have some to share…

·    New Forest Ice Cream was founded in Lymington in 1983. 34 years of making delic ious ice cream and sorbet!

·    We remain a family run business, with directors Christina Veal and Nicola Jenman being twin daughters of the founders, Sue & Lawrie Jenman, along with cousin, David Bishop who is Production Director.

·    Our ice creams and sorbets have won exclusive ‘Great Taste Award Gold Stars’ every year since 2012!

·    Our Vanilla stays at No.1 position even after 34 years with Salted Caramel coming in close behind.

·    During a sunny National Ice Cream month we can produce 4000 litres of ice cream every hour!

Every day is National Ice Cream day for us, so make the most of the sunshine this weekend and head down to the New Forest Ice Cream parlour to get in plenty of practice before the 16th! We have over 20 flavours of ice cream and sorbets to pick and choose from, so you’re sure to be a connoisseur by the end of the month.

Move over florals - ice cream is the new summer fashion trend and of course, we had to get involved! We have spotted a few great options, if like us, you fancy rocking the ice cream prints and making a real statement this season.

Very reminiscent of the retro 50’s and taking pastels to a whole new level, ice cream has been making its way into fashion quite  a lot recently. The cute illustrations and fun colours are perfect for summer and sure to brighten up the day whether the sun is shining or not!

Muted and dusted colours go hand in hand with ice cream so if you’re a fan of pastels, this trend will be right up your street. Baby pinks, blues, mint and yellows all work really well with ice cream patterns and prints, instantly adding a dash of the 50’s vintage scene. What could be better than looking like you’ve just come from a diner full of bubble gum dresses, milkshakes and sundaes topped with glacé cherries?

There are many different designs on the high street to suit everyone’s individual style; the pale blue off the shoulder dress from ASOS is colourful and vibrant choice. Alternatively, the navy blouses from River Island & Zara are a little bit more sophisticated and work appropriate, incorporating the trend in a more subtle manner.

With it being the peak of summer and ice cream being more fashionable than ever, we have picked a few of our favourite pieces that feature the ice cream trend! Let’s face it; wearing ice cream is almost as good as eating it…

In aid of National Dairy Month, we wanted to share a tasty summer recipe that really shows off our legendary Vanilla Pod ice cream! Made from whole milk and double cream. Our Vanilla ice cream is wonderfully rich, with a thick & creamy texture like no other.

Eton Mess is the perfect light and fruity dessert to end any summer meal and what’s more, it’s easy, elegant and takes only a matter of minutes to make; this means no slaving away in the kitchen on a hot day! Eton Mess is a classic British dessert, originating from Eton College in the 19th century, where it was served at their annual cricket games against Winchester College and has been enjoyed by the nation ever since. The simple recipe can be easily adapted however you like and tastes wonderful with the added addition of some traditional, velvety vanilla ice cream, for the ultimate indulgent dessert.

For this delightfully refreshing take on the Eton Mess, crush together the raspberries and all except for two of the strawberries so that the fruit becomes a pulp. The more berries, the merrier in this recipe and it’s entirely down to personal preference; we’re going to assume it definitely counts as 1 of our 5 a day too, right?

Season the fruity compote with the icing sugar and Kirsch. Then semi-whip the cream and icing sugar together. Break up the meringues into small pieces and cut the remaining strawberries into wedges. To serve, scoop a generous ball of New Forest Vanilla Pod ice cream into the bottom of each of six chilled sundae glasses. Cover the ice cream with a small amount of pulp and then top with the strawberry chunks. Finally, fold the crushed meringue with the rest of the pulp into the cream to form a lovely rippled effect. Spoon this mixture into the glasses and garnish each glass with a sprig of fresh mint.

And, your Eton Mess sundae is ready to serve! This treat is ideal for alfresco dining and BBQ’s and will definitely be a crowd pleaser this summer.

INGREDIENTS FOR 6 SERVINGS:

  • 2 punnets raspberries
  • 2 punnets strawberries
  • Icing sugar, to taste
  • Kirsch liqueur
  • 200g double cream
  • 20g icing sugar
  • 6 crushed meringues
  • 6 balls of New Forest   Vanilla Pod ice cream
  • Six sprigs of mint, to garnish
